The Motorola Edge 30 Pro is a new high-end phone from an American manufacturer. The brand’s 2022 device brings the powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip and a two-year factory warranty as highlights. The Edge 20 Pro, on the other hand, although it is the previous version of the premium smartphone, still brings attractive technical data for a more affordable price. Screen and design
One of the big highlights of Motorola’s Edge lineup models is the offering of 144 Hz displays, faster than the screens that refresh at 120 Hz found on devices like the Galaxy S22 and iPhone 13 Pro. In addition to the high speed, the American manufacturer’s screen comes with OLED technology and measures 6.7 inches in both generations of the phone.
Another feature that applies to both phones is the display resolution: 2400 x 1080 pixels (Full HD+). One difference between the two, however, is the glass that covers the screen: in the Edge 30 Pro, Motorola applies Gorilla Glass 3, while the Edge 20 Pro, although it is older, has Gorilla Glass 5, which is more resistant to drops and scratches.
In design, Motorola is conservative: there is little difference between one generation and the other, with the most obvious difference being the contours of the module that houses the cameras, still positioned in the upper left corner of the rear panel of both devices.
What does change from one generation to the other is the finish. While the Edge 20 Pro is composed of a mix of glass and aluminum, the Edge 30 Pro uses a base frame made of plastic. Neither of the two is certified water resistant.
Cameras
There are major changes in the camera system, although both smartphones feature the same number of sensors. While the Motorola Edge 20 Pro came with a 108 Megapixels main camera, the 30 Pro got lower maximum resolution cameras – which doesn’t necessarily mean a loss of quality.
On the Motorola Edge 30 Pro, the following photographic arrangement can be found:

Motorola’s lens profile enables the phone to operate by allowing the user to transition from conventional framing with the main lens (wide) to wider shots with the ultra-wide. The depth sensor has the task of detecting the distance of objects in the frame, an important function for applying effects and blurring objects in the background.

The Edge 20 Pro is distinguished by the presence of a camera with a telephoto lens, which has the function of providing the ability to make an accurate optical zoom (5x) of distant elements. Already macro photography for images with great proximity is present in both smartphones.
In terms of video, both Motorola phones are capable of recording in 8K with a maximum of 24 FPS (frames per second) samples for this resolution range. In both cases, the wide lens comes with OIS technology for stabilization, responsible for preventing shaky video and photos.
Finally, the selfies: the Edge 30 Pro won with a leap in maximum resolution: the new model comes with a 60 MP sensor, almost double the maximum resolution of the 32 MP camera installed on the predecessor.
Performance
One of the biggest differences between the two phones is the processor. The Edge 20 Pro, despite being the brand’s high-end phone, had a weak point compared to its rivals. This is because the Snapdragon 870 chip (octa-core up to 3.2 GHz) chosen by Motorola was a processor with a mid-range profile, below the Snapdragon 888, Qualcomm’s premium alternative for 2021.
The Edge 30 Pro corrects this by offering the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, the most powerful CPU in Qualcomm’s current portfolio, which is the same one consumers find in the Galaxy S22. The processor is also an octa-core and that, the result of a more advanced manufacturing process, should prove to be more efficient. In performance, it is up to 3 GHz.
There are several versions of the two models concerning memory and data capacity. Motorola offers two generations of the Edge with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. None of them, there is microSD card compatibility.
Battery
From one generation to the next, there are gains in raw battery capacity. While the Edge 20 Pro came with 4,500 mAh, the new model employs a 4,800 mAh battery. In addition to the capacity gain, Motorola has revised the support for charging technologies in the new Edge: while the previous model went up to 30 W, the Edge 30 Pro can accept fast charging up to 68 W.
That’s so much power that Motorola estimates that the user can recharge the battery from zero to 100 percent in just 35 minutes. Another good news is that the charger comes with the phone in the box, just as it already did with the 2021 model.
Operating system
The new Motorola comes out of the box with Android 12, while its predecessor came to market with Android 11, although the process of updating the phone to the new edition of Google’s platform has already begun.
In both cases the consumer will find an operating system with a graphical interface customized by Motorola: it is the MyUX, a set of modifications that the brand applies in its devices for some years.
Additional Features
Both devices are offered with fingerprint reading technology mounted on the side, taking advantage of the on/off button. As for wireless networks, there are advantages in favor of the Edge 30 Pro which, is newer, and has access to more advanced technologies: out goes the Wi-Fi 6 of the Edge 20 Pro, and in comes, Wi-Fi 6E; out goes Bluetooth 5.1, and in comes 5.2. The upgrades provide subtle changes in increased connection speeds.
Both are compatible with the 5G network. Both devices also use NFC and allow the use of the smartphone as a method of payment by proximity. Both also allow the use of two NanoSIM simultaneously. There is no headphone output and charging and data synchronization are performed via USB-C.
Price and Availability
More rotated in the market, the Motorola Edge 20 Pro is naturally cheaper at the moment. The 2021 phone sells for as low as $375 on Amazon. The Motorola Edge 30 Pro, on the other hand, has not yet had time to receive discounts. Newly launched, the smartphone has a suggested retail price of $729 at present, which is competitive with other premium Android phones on the market.
