We are going to explain what Bard, the artificial intelligence chat created by Google, is and what it offers. It is an alternative to ChatGPT, the search engine company that intends to have its competitor in this field. The idea is still that you ask questions and it offers you the answers without having to enter another website.
Google Bard has not been officially launched, so we still do not have all the information about what it is capable of doing. However, we are going to tell you in this article everything we know about the AI with which Google will compete with ChatGPT, and when we know more details we will update it.
What is Bard
Bard is an Artificial Intelligence system created by Google. It is a conversational system, so you will be able to interact with it through normal messages. In these messages, you will write something you want to know or want it to do, and Bard will respond or do it.
This AI from the search engine giant is based on LaMDA, a powerful experimental language model designed by Google specifically for dialog applications. This model had been in a very closed testing phase for some time, as only a few people had access to it.
For years, Google has been the undisputed leader in the Internet search market. However, this position has recently been threatened by the arrival of AI models capable of giving you the information in a conversational way. If you want to search for something on Google, you have to look through its websites, while AIs like ChatGPT are trained to give you a direct answer.
Where Bard comes from
Early on, Google already had a direct competitor to ChatGPT, which was called LaMDA. However, the search engine company preferred not to take it out of the lab to avoid damaging its reputation, as they did not consider it to be ready yet.
However, shortly afterward and because of ChatGPT’s growing popularity, they decided to activate a “red code” to launch their alternative as soon as possible and not be left behind in the AI boom. And after previous rumors, on February 7 they presented Bard, their own conversational AI that will be available in a few weeks.
The term LaMDA stands for Language Model for Dialogue Applications, although for its official launch, they have decided to change its name to simply Bard. But LaMDA has already left us with some curious news in the past, such as an engineer fired for suggesting it had a “conscience”.
At first, Bard will be released with a reduced model of LaMDA, which requires less computing power and so can be used by more people. With this, they will be able to get comments and feedback from users who use it, which combined with Google’s own internal testing will help further develop the AI and improve its responses.
How Bard works
We still have very little information about this AI, as Google has not yet presented it giving the details, this detailed presentation will take place in a few weeks, and we will update this article to complete all the information.
However, we do have some initial clues as to how it will work. First of all, Bard will be constantly connected to the Internet. This is very important, since AI chat systems such as ChatGPT are not, so they are not useful for obtaining information related to current events, and in many cases, they can give you outdated information.
As they have explained, Bard will get the information directly from the Internet and will use it to create current and quality answers. The idea is that you can ask questions in natural language, as you would ask anyone else, and Bard will first understand what you want to say, and then be able to give you an accurate answer almost immediately.
Bard will be integrated as a search function within Google, so it will not be independent of the search engine. The intention is that users will continue to log in to Google to unleash their creativity and make requests to Bard.
We do not yet know what kind of requests we will be able to make beyond getting answers to questions. ChatGPT has many functions, so it is to be expected that Bard will also allow us to do many other things, although it has not yet been specified which ones.
About this, Google has only said that it can be used to satisfy curiosity or to give free rein to creativity. We can use it to explain things to a child or even to create training routines to improve our skills.
When will Bard arrive?
Google has been quick to announce its new AI, especially because one of its major competitors, Microsoft, has announced that it will implement the GPT-4 model in Bing, having ChatGPT in its search engine. Therefore, Google is already announcing that they are also going to do something similar, but with their model.
However, there is still no arrival date for Bard. We only know that it will reach the public “in the coming weeks” in a testing phase and that currently, the company’s internal testers are testing the AI to make sure everything works as it should.
In addition to this, from next month developers will have the possibility to experiment with the Bard technology API, so that they can implement this AI in their applications.
