Screen and design

Galaxy Z Fold 4

Samsung didn’t make any major changes in terms of the design of the new Z Fold line. Thus, the screen of the newly launched model continues along the lines of the Galaxy Z Fold 3, with 6.2 inches on the external display and 7.6 on the internal display. What changes, however, is the reformulation of the aspect ratio, which has gone from 24.5:9 to 23:9 in the newest phone – with the proposal to ensure greater ergonomics for users. As for the resolution, it changes slightly from the 2,208 x 1,768 pixels of the internal panel to 2,176 x 1,812 pixels. The variation is also noticeable on the external display.

Still, about the display, it is worth mentioning that both generations have a refresh rate of 120 Hz, a factor that ensures an efficient transition in images, without them leaving traces on the screen during movements during the display of games or movies. In common, the phones also feature Dynamic AMOLED 2X as the panel technology to ensure deep contrasts and vivid colors.

In terms of structure, the IPX8 certification present in the phones stands out for the protection it gives to the brand’s foldable phones. Thus, they can stay in contact with water under a depth of up to 1.5 m for 30 minutes.

As mentioned, the design has not changed much between one model and another. Thus, the devices keep the external camera set aligned vertically, while camouflaging the selfie lens, present on the internal screen. The other selfie camera, on the outside, is located in a small notch.

The coating is made of Gorilla Glass on phones, which is also distinguished by the colors of the finish. The Z Fold 3 makes available models in silver, dark green, and black, while the Z Fold 4 trades cream, graphite, and black options.

Galaxy Z Fold Camera

Galaxy Z Fold 4

The Galaxy Z Fold 4’s camera set has evolved from that of the previous model. The Z Fold 3’s core set featured 12 Megapixels on all sensors. The most prominent update has occurred in the ultra-wide camera, which is now 50 MP in the newly released model. The size of the lenses has also increased in the new version.

Check out the Galaxy Z Fold 4:

  • 12 MP main (f/2.2)
  • Ultra-wide 50 MP (f/1.8)
  • Teleobjective 10 MP (f/2.4)
  • 10 MP (f/2.2) Front (external)
  • Front (internal) 4 MP (f/1.8)

The following are the sensors of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 :

  • 12 MP main (f/1.8)
  • 12 MP Ultra Wide (f/2.2)
  • Teleobjective 12 MP (f/2.4)
  • Front (external) 10 MP (f/2.2)
  • Front (inner) 4 MP (f/1.8)

As you can see, the ultra-wide-angle sensor, which is used to take captures from a wider angle, has gone from 12 MP to 50 MP between one generation and the next. The telephoto camera, meanwhile, has dropped from 12 to 10 MP in the new phone. This latter sensor helps to make photos with greater close-up capability, giving the zoom needed to capture landscapes and distant objects.

In addition to features such as 4K video recording, optical stabilization, and optimizations through artificial intelligence, Samsung also offers the ability to shoot multiple angles simultaneously. The highlight, however, is the internal selfie camera in both models, which blends into the screen, becoming almost invisible when not in use.

Performance and Storage

Galaxy Z Fold3 5G

Regarding performance, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 does well to bring the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1, a chip that won nine of the ten places in the ranking of the world’s most powerful phones in July 2022, according to AnTuTu. The Z Fold 3, on the other hand, brings the Snapdragon 888, a processor that stood out in the smartphones of 2021.

To operate in tandem with Qualcomm’s respect chips, Samsung has conferred 12 GB of RAM for each device. It is worth remembering that the larger the space in this sense, the greater the efficiency in multitasking processing of the cell phone. Storage, in turn, stands at 256 GB or 512 GB in the Z Fold 3 and reaches up to 1 TB in the latest model.

Both phones do without a microSD card slot, a trend that has manifested significantly among other recently launched handsets. So if consumers are looking for ample memory, they should consider a version with generous storage.

The battery of the Galaxy Z Fold

If the cameras distinguish the foldables in some ways, the battery brings them closer together. The 4,400 mAh capacity is retained by Samsung in the current model. The number falls below some mid-range phones, which already guarantee users 5,000 mAh, to optimize time away from plugs.

On the other hand, some software optimizations have contributed to making the charge last longer. In addition, the variable screen refresh rate makes it possible that the phones do not consume as much power as those that use 120 Hz full time.

Both devices offer varied charging possibilities, such as traditional wired charging, wireless charging, or reverse charging, where one phone makes power available to the other by induction. According to Samsung, it is possible to charge half of the battery via fast charging in just 30 minutes.

System Version

Android 12L

The operating system is also a factor that differentiates the two phones, even though both feature Google’s software. The difference is that while the Galaxy Z Fold 3 lands with Android 11, the successor offers Android 12L, a version specifically for devices with extended screens, such as tablets.

The novelty contemplates some features that can optimize daily tasks done on the screens, as is the case with the foldables in question. With some adaptations, it is even possible to accommodate the device’s tools in a sidebar, just like in the systems present in PCs.

Additional Features

Galaxy Z Fold3 5G

In the case of the members of the Z Fold line, support for the S Pen is one of the features in evidence. The brand’s smart pen can be used to interact with the extended screen of the Z Fold 3 and Z Fold 4 models. However, both leave aside the presence of the P2 input for headphones, reserving space only for the USB-C output, which will share space with the charger.

In terms of connectivity, both feature 5G, a prominent factor at a time when the network begins to integrate into many countries. Wi-Fi 6 is also present in the models’ specifications. On the other hand, they differ in the Bluetooth version, since the newer one brings updates in this aspect, making the connection faster and more intuitive.

A fingerprint reader, stereo audio, and NFC are common additions to the foldable models. The last feature allows payments by proximity without the need for a card nearby.
