Rumors had been swirling for months and they were agreeing on something that would be a change: more range in the same Apple mobile phone package. And so it has been, seeing that the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max are now official and accompany the iPhone 12 without this surname, including the new iPhone 12 mini.
These are the manufacturer’s most advanced mobile phones for 2020 and also the largest, talking the Max which integrates the longest diagonal we have seen on an iPhone historically. They also come with the latest Apple processor and incorporate 5G network compatibility, something not seen in Apple phones until this year.

The Recovery of a Historic Design
They are the direct successors of the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max, although the design has undergone significant changes. The angled edges are back, iPad Pro style, and recovered from the iPhone 5s and earlier models, saying goodbye to the hemisphere curvature.
The materials are still glass for the back and steel for the edges, which in turn maintain the physical buttons. What we don’t see is the supposed notch reduction, which remains as it is until now quite large compared to the one usually seen in the form of a “U”.
However, there is the ceramic layer that we have also seen on the iPhone 12, and that according to the brand gives unprecedented resistance. We will have to see if this is the case, as we will also have to check if this design is comfortable to hand.
The Same Notch and the Same Refresh Rate
Something we expected to see on the new iPhones is a rise in the refresh rate, as we’ve been seeing even on mid-range mobiles for a few months now. But no, the iPhones remain at 60 Hz, although they slightly increase the resolution.
There are 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED screens for the standard Pro and 6.7-inch for the Max. The resolution is 2,532 x 1,170 pixels and 2,778 x 1,184 pixels respectively, remaining at about 460 pixels per inch.
A Powerful Engine
As usual, Apple uses the iPhone to release its processor. This is the Apple A14 Bionic, built-in 5 nanometers, but as usual, we do not know the RAM of any of the models. Although the novelty has been emphasized as almost nothing else today: the 5G.
However, the minimum storage capacity is 128 GB, and there are also versions with 256 GB and 512 GB. There is also no battery data, but we know that these iPhone Pro lines also take advantage of the new MagSafe wireless charging feature. This MagSafe allows for wireless charging of up to 15 W, while the chargers with the Qi standard allow for charging of up to 7.5 W. If a fast charge cable is used instead, this can be up to 50% in half an hour with a 20 W or more adapter.
Three rear cameras with LiDAR included
Apple keeps in its high-end smartphones the three-back camera systems we already saw last year. These are a wide-angle camera, an ultra-wide-angle camera, and a telephoto lens. The only difference between the two models is that the larger one has optical image stabilization by sensor shift.
In addition to the technical improvements we have seen in the specifications, the highlight of the cameras this year is the improvements in night photography and video. Thanks to the larger aperture of the wide-angle camera (from Æ’/1.6) the system captures more light for clearer and more detailed pictures at night. In addition to this, the new LiDAR scans the environment to create a more detailed depth map regardless of whether it is night or day. Also, the ability to take pictures in night portrait mode.
Speaking of the Pro Max, the sensor is 47% larger than the previous one (according to Apple) with pixels of 1.7 μm, promising an improvement of 87% in low light conditions. Besides, 12 Max’s telephoto lens has a 65-millimeter focal length and the system’s total zoom is 5x, as described by the brand.
Some improvements will come to both iPhone 12 Pro, such as the new ProRAW feature, which combines Apple’s multi-sequence processing and computer photography with RAW file type and possibilities. This means that users will be able to edit color, level of detail, and dynamic range natively on the iPhone or another computer.
The manufacturer also takes the video to heart and claims that these iPhone 12 Pro are the first devices in the world with end-to-end Dolby Vision and HDR recording with Dolby Vision up to 60 fps. Also, in the Pro Max, there is an improved optical stabilization system.
