iPhone 12: Features, Reviews, and Prices

Apple has just made official the iPhone 12. It is the mid-range model in this new generation iPhone, being one step above the iPhone 12 mini, but below the 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max models. The iPhone 12 is predicted to be one of Apple’s bestselling, just as the iPhone 11 did on the grounds of specifications that are close to the pro and pro max at a relatively low price.

This year the strategy is repeated and, again, its mid-range model does not opt for the triple camera. However, there is an important increase in the screen level, and the iPhone 12 features OLED technology and Full HD+ resolution (Super Retina XDR) in a 6.1-inch panel. The 5G connection also becomes the focus of this iPhone 12. Let’s take a look at its features.

An Awesome Design and a Renewed Screen

iPhone 12

The design of the iPhone 12 is similar to the one we saw in the last generation, although Apple has drawn some brushstrokes with different lines. The first notable change comes from the frames, which are now much tighter on the sides and at the top and bottom. The iPhone 11 had much more frame than the iPhone 12, due to the lack of flexibility of the IPS panels, among others. Thanks to the implementation of the OLED screen, iPhone 12 has better use of the front.

In particular, according to data from Apple, the iPhone 12 is 11% thinner, 15% smaller, and 16% lighter than the iPhone 11, important changes considering that this model has the same diagonal screen as last year.

Thus, this year the iPhone 12 is virtually equal in frames compared to the Pro models, which also reduces frames compared to the iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max. Regarding the much-talked-about notch, it continues to make an appearance, occupying a good part of the device’s front. However, if the device is turned upside down, some lines are practically the same as last year’s, with the glass as the main feature.

The aerospace aluminum frames of the device have been redesigned. Now remind us more of the iPhone 4, being much flatter and straighter instead of the curvature that has accompanied the Apple devices since the iPhone 6. This iPhone 12 does not feature stainless steel, which is still reserved for the Pro models.

Regarding the panel, there is a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR screen, this year with OLED technology. This ends the great chasm that was in front of the panel of the Pro models since last year the iPhone 11 came with HD+ resolution and IPS technology. The refresh rate is 60Hz, no Promotion for the iPhone 12 or its Pro brothers.

More power on board and 5G connectivity

5G Connectivity

The processor that gives life to the iPhone 12 is the Apple A14 Bionic, a chip that has already been released in the new iPad Air. This is the first mobile processor with 5-nanometer technology. This processor has two high-performance cores and four cores dedicated to low-demand tasks, to try to maintain a balance between power and autonomy. This processor is compatible with 5G connectivity both SA and NSA.

As usual, Apple does not give figures on RAM but is expected to be 4GB on this iPhone 12 and 6GB in Pro models. At the level of autonomy, the charger is lost in the box and the 18W of fast charge is maintained. This means that we will have to buy the Apple charger separately, in case we don’t have one at home.

The choice for biometrics is once again Face ID. Apple is once again implementing its 3D facial recognition with the help of a point projector, whose data is guaranteed to be saved locally. One of the great novelties of this iPhone is MagSafe, a magnetic technology that allows you to connect different accessories, such as cases with chargers. It also allows improvements in wireless charging, a technology already present in the iPhone 11, but improved in this new iPhone family.

Double camera with a better lens and larger lens aperture

iPhone 12

The iPhone 12 uses a double camera configuration, as the last generation, with the iPhone 11. The main sensor is still 12 megapixels, along with a wide-angle also 12 megapixels. As last year, there is an optical stabilizer on the main sensor. The iPhone 12 has a sensor with a better lens and f/1.7 aperture, promising better low-light photography.

As usual at Apple, the work falls mainly on the software, where there have been great improvements. The first of them is the new generation HDR, Smart HDR 3. It promises a better dynamic range and the detail aims to be quite rich.

The big breakthrough, however, is at the video level. The iPhone 12 is the first mobile phone capable of recording in 4K Dolby Vision. In particular, it is capable of recording video with a color depth of 10 bits. Similarly, you can edit Dolby Vision videos from the app Photos, iMovie, or Clips, from the phone.
