A Pocket-size format that can be easily slipped into the pocket

Samsung has changed the bending direction of the Samsung Galaxy Fold in this Z Flip. What used to be handled like a book is now a notebook. That is, with the hinge on top. It’s the format known as a shell that we enjoyed on mobile phones over a decade ago. This changes everything, both the design and the user experience. And that’s one of the reasons why we think this Samsung Galaxy Z Flip might be more interesting to you than the Fold experience. But we’ll come to deeper conclusions when we try it out on our own.

So far, we’ve seen how this format folds the phone into a wallet size that fits comfortably in your pocket. A square without edges, but with curves, and does not occupy the same space as a mobile phone. However, when unfolded, it appears to as a flexible screen with no less than 6.7 inches. In a quite film-like format if we put it in a landscape, in its 21,9:9 (very similar to the screens of a cinema of 21:9). So it is taller than a normal mobile, but it is not a tablet as it was in the Galaxy Fold. And the best thing: you can control it with one hand.

This fold is a work of engineering that affects both the screen and the hinge. The first is a flexible Dynamic AMOLED panel, or as Samsung calls it: Infinity Flex Display. By the way, it has a hole for the front camera, so this panel brings together the best display technologies from Samsung. All in all, a very eye-catching panel with the possibility of folding it on itself.

The second technology is the hinge developed by Samsung. It joins the two halves of the mobile phone with a central piece that disappears when you unfold it. Therefore, the mechanism is safe and allows a strong position both open and closed. And not only that but also in intermediate angles, which allows other interesting uses for the device we see now.

By the way, this hinge system also has nylon fibers that are predisposed to sweep away dirt and make sure that dust does not build up in this gap.

More Useful Functions

One of the strengths of having a mobile that folds up is that its bottom can act as a base or support. That is, you can leave it on any flat surface and unfold the top at 90 degrees (or any other angle). It’s kind of like a portable position. Just enough to keep the mobile in this position without having to hold it with your hands, making it possible to take selfies without the need for a selfie stick or a tripod of any kind. Or to hold video calls without having to constantly hold the device. But Samsung has gone one step further.

In this flexed position or laptop mode, other uses have also developed. For example, when we take several photos, we can maintain this position and access the gallery. The upper part of the screen will show the photos, while we can navigate with gestures through the gallery (to the left and right) to see the others. Without losing sight with our finger. And the same goes for watching YouTube videos while you have the related screen below to know what to watch next.

But watch out, the possibilities have also multiplied when the mobile is folded. Thanks to the screen and external cameras we can perform actions without opening it. Using it with its small size. You can take pictures quickly without having to open it so that you don’t miss a moment or do it comfortably with one hand.

Although its exterior screen is small, only 1.1 inches, but with Super AMOLED technology, it can show notifications, battery level or incoming calls. You can even slide call alerts left or right to pick up or hang up without even opening your phone. And you can also see notifications of incoming messages, and read them on this small, full-color panel. If you want to answer them, just click on the notification and unfold your phone and you’ll find yourself in front of the chat screen in question.

And of course, there’s multitasking. With a 6.7-inch screen split into two 4-inch screens, you can launch two applications at once. For example, one-half of the screen can be used to watch YouTube videos, and the other half to write down all the recipe data. But the possibilities are many more.

Price and Availability

Now that we know the design and the technical characteristics, we only have the desire to try it out. And see if all these features and changes in terms of folding phones and panels improve the experience of the Samsung Galaxy Fold. Something that we will see in the future and that we will tell you about here, in techidence.com.

The interesting thing is that we already know their price and availability. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip now available in different markets. It will be available in two colors: purple or black. It is surprising, for goodness sake, that in front of such an advanced technical sheet and a design that still looks futuristic, Samsung has cut the price compared to its previous folding mobile. This time, the Galaxy Z Flip can be purchased on Amazon for $1,249. Phones with flexible shell-type displays seem to be here to stay.
