Is Canon EOS M200 worth it? Check specifications before buying the camera

The Canon EOS M200 is an entry-level mirrorless camera option with interchangeable lenses. Launched in August 2021, it sells for $549 on Amazon and comes with an EF-M 15-45mm lens. Mirrorless, the camera is lightweight and portable, and even features a 24.1 MP CMOS sensor, being able to take pictures and videos in up to 4K resolution.

The Canon model also has features that make it easier to use, such as a quick share function for social networks (through Wi-Fi connectivity), screen rotation, and autofocus. Check out, below, the main details of the EOS M200 datasheet.

Design

The Canon EOS M200 is a very compact camera. This is made possible by the absence of mirrors – unlike DSLR models, which have internal mirrors, making them larger and heavier. For comparison, the Canon T7+, the brand’s entry-level DSLR model, weighs 475 g (almost double that of the EOS M200) and has dimensions 129.0 x 101.3 x 77.6 mm (the depth, for example, is more than double that of the EOS M200).

To keep the compact size, the EOS M200 has few physical buttons. Those who use the camera in manual mode, for example, may miss buttons for quick access to some functions, such as changing ISO, aperture, and shutter speed. However, the 3-inch touchscreen can help replace them.

The size can make it a bit difficult to hold. The front of the camera is straight, unlike some camera models that have a relief to fit the hands. Furthermore, there is no rubber on the sides to prevent the camera from slipping – just a few grooves on the body, which are made of plastic.

The camera also has a built-in pop-up flash, but there is no external flash shoe. On the side, there is a Micro-USB input, an SD memory card input, and a Micro-HDMI output. Underneath there is a 1/4 thread, which is standard for placing on tripods.

Viewfinder

Canon EOS M200

Canon’s entry-level mirrorless model has no electronic viewfinder, only a 3-inch LCD screen. A big advantage is the articulation present in the device, although the tilt is limited to 180 degrees on its axis. In any case, it is possible to turn it all the way forward, which helps those who want to take selfies or record vlog-style videos. Since the screen is touch-sensitive, using the camera’s menus and functions is easy.

Performance

The Canon EOS M200 has a 24.1 MP APS-C CMOS sensor. It is responsible for transforming the light coming from the lens into a digital image. In this camera, the sensor’s light sensitivity, or ISO, ranges from 100 to 25,600 in photo mode (the higher the ISO, the more sensitive to light). This function is useful in cases of poor lighting in the environment in which the photo or video is being taken. However, it is not very good to “abuse” the ISO value, since the higher it is, the grainier (or noisier) the photo will be.

The camera’s shutter speed can vary from 1/4000 to 30 seconds – the lower the value, the faster the shutter will open and close. Thus, by using a slower shutter speed, the sensor is exposed to the light coming through the lens for longer, which can be useful in cases of long exposure shots and even in darker environments. However, it is worth remembering that the slower the shutter speed, the greater the risk of the photo being “shaky”.

The camera also has 143 focus points for using the autofocus function. For video recording, you can use 4K resolution at 24 fps, Full HD at up to 60 fps, and HD at up to 120 fps – this last setting allows the creation of slow-motion videos. Audio can be captured via the built-in microphone, which is stereo. The DIGIC 8 is responsible for processing the images on the device.

Sensor

The sensor used in the camera registers a smaller part of the image that was captured by the lens, causing a decrease in the angle of view. However, this is a common feature in cheaper cameras – only in intermediate cameras are full-frame sensors found, i.e. that register the same angle of view as captured by the lens.

Canon EOS M200

However, one of the big problems with this reduced angle of view is when using 4K video recording. In this mode, the image cutoff factor (i.e. the difference between the image captured by the lens and that recorded by the camera), which is 1.6x, jumps to 2.56x. This makes it a bit more difficult to do vlog-like filming since the image will look closer. In Full HD and HD, there is no additional crop factor to the sensor.

Lenses

The camera uses EF-M mount lenses. Its basic kit contains a lens with a focal length that varies between 15 and 45 mm – the smaller the value, the more open the image. Thus, it will be an acceptable lens for close-up shots and recordings, but it can fail if the idea is to capture something further away from the camera.

The kit lens has a maximum aperture ranging from f/3.5 to f/6.3 – the smaller the value after “f/”, the more light the lens receives. A clear lens has an aperture greater than f/2.8, which is not the case with the lens in this set. Therefore, it will be necessary to compensate by increasing the sensitivity of the sensor in case of darker environments. In addition, lenses with larger apertures allow more blurring of the background of photos optically.

The user doesn’t have to use only the kit lens – several models of EF-M mount lenses are sold on the market, including on Canon’s website. It is still possible to use lenses with EF and EF-S mounts using an adapter, which is sold separately on the manufacturer’s website.

Ports and connectivity

You can connect the EOS M200 to your cell phone via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. This functionality allows you to control the camera via your smartphone and even automatically transfer files to your Android or iOS phone. Via Wi-Fi, you can also connect to computers, printers, and even cloud services to transfer files directly from the camera.

For wired connections, there are Micro-USB and Micro-HDMI. The USB connection can be used on computers, allowing file transfers, updating the camera firmware, and using the device as a webcam. The HDMI connection can be used to display images on televisions or external monitors.

There is also an SD card slot, which can be SD, SDHC, or SDXC UHS-I. It is important to note that the camera does not shoot pictures or videos without a card, and since the starter kit does not contain one, you need to buy one to use it. You also need to check in the manual what type of card you need to use if it is used for video – as there are cards with slower recording speeds, and some are not compatible with video recording.

Battery

This model uses LP-E12 batteries, which have 875 mAh of capacity. According to the manufacturer, you can record Full HD video at 30 fps for about 90 minutes or take about 315 shots on a fully charged battery at an ambient temperature of 23 degrees Celsius. Also according to Canon, the battery takes about two hours to be fully charged. It is a relatively low autonomy, so it is recommended to buy a new battery so that you can rotate between them and the user is not left in the middle of a video recording or photo session.

Extra Features

Focusing on a more enthusiastic audience, the camera has several functions related to photo filters. The self-portrait mode, for example, focuses on selfies and helps with adjusting brightness, background blur, and skin tones. The Creative Filter Wizard helps you to change the camera settings and shows you the results in real-time.

Accessories

Canon EOS M200 accessories

The camera comes with a basic accessory kit. In addition to the body and lens, there is a battery, charger, and strap. It is worth noting that the camera does not come with an SD card, which is essential for it to work. Therefore, when purchasing the equipment, it is necessary to buy a card along with it.

Pricing and Availability

Launched in 2021, the Canon EOS M200 is on sale at Amazon for $549 in its standard version. On the manufacturer’s official website, you can find some other kits. There are options that come with the adapter for EF and EF-S lenses and an EF 50mm f/1.8 lens and for those who want to use the camera for streaming, there is a kit option with a tripod, USB cable, and USB lavalier microphone for additional fees.

Canon offers a two-year warranty on the camera and lens.
