Asus ROG Strix and Asus Rog Strix Scar: Features, Reviews, and Prices

The technological machinery has no brakes, the launches follow their natural course, even if they have been altered by external forces. Asus had called on many enthusiasts in Porto to know their new laptops for gamers. Many geeks hoped to meet and test first hand the new members of their Strix, TUF and Zephyrus families, unfortunately, this event could not take place due to the Coronavirus Outbreak. But this doesn’t mean that Asus has delayed its launch, in fact, we are going to present in detail the new Asus ROG Strix and Strix SCAR. Let’s get started.

Asus ROG Strix G15 and G17, RTX 2070 Super, and Display with 240 Hz Refresh Rate

The two new members of the Asus ROG Strix line are the Asus ROG Strix G15 and G17. Both have similar features inside, the main difference is found on the screen and not only in size but also in the refresh rate. The Asus ROG Strix G15 mounts a 15-inch IPS panel with Full HD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels) and a refresh rate of 240Hz; the Asus ROG Strix G17 maintains the resolution but instead increases the screen diagonal to 17 inches and the refresh rate decreases to a respectable 144Hz.

Both the Asus ROG Strix G15 and G17 have the good horsepower. Inside both laptops, you’ll find the latest in components. The processors are signed by Intel and are topped by the Intel Core i7-10875H with its 8 cores and 16 threads. Storage will depend on the model we choose, but all of them keep the possibility of having up to three storage units. However, two of them must be M.2 NVMe PCIe 3.0 and have the advantage of being able to mount a RAID 0; the third unit is a conventional solid-state disk. For RAM the maximum will be 32GB DDR4 in a dual-channel at 3200 MHz.

What about the graphics card? The Asus ROG Strix G15 and G17 are powered by the NVIDIA RTX 2070 Super with 8GB of GDDR6 memory for graphics processing. This graphics card is an updated revision of the RTX 2070 with performance and temperature improvements. In line with this, Asus has emphasized that both notebooks use liquid metal instead of conventional thermal paste. For the lesser placed in these terms, liquid metal is a component that has a more efficient heat transmission. The result is lower temperatures achieves better performance.

Asus ROG Strix Scar 15 AND 17, RTX 2070 Super, and Display with 300Hz Refresh Rate

The Asus ROG Strix does not arrive alone, they are accompanied by two models of the SCAR family. These are the Asus ROG Strix SCAR 15 and 17, both cut in almost the same pattern as the Strix, but with interesting differences. The most remarkable is their screen, 15 and 17 inches IPS respectively with Full HD resolution, but with a refresh rate that goes up to 300Hz. Yes, if 240Hz already seemed crazy on a laptop, Asus puts 300Hz on the table for those online enthusiasts.

Inside both Asus ROG Strix SCARs, we will find a configuration based on Intel processors and NVIDIA graphics with up to 32GB of DDR4 RAM at 3200 MHz and three storage units, two of the M.2 NVMe PCIe enabling a RAID 0 and the third one a conventional SSD. If we go into detail, the processors of the most advanced configurations are different. In the Asus ROG Strix SCAR 15, the top one is the Intel Core i7-10875H with its 8 cores and 16 threads while the Asus ROG Strix SCAR 17 mounts the Intel Core i9-10980HK with up to 5.3GHz frequency. In the graphics section, the 17-inch model is equipped with the NVIDIA RTX 2080 Super, while the 15-inch model is equipped with the NVIDIA RTX 2070 Super.

In addition, accessing the interior of the new Asus ROG Strix and Strix SCAR is really easy. Asus has managed to simplify the experience when expanding RAM, storage or simply admiring the liquid metal cooled interior. It has done so by implementing a special screw that holds the case and thus dispenses with the tabs that are attached to the chassis, only a screwdriver is needed to access the interior of these laptops. However, the Asus ROG Strix SCAR 15 and 17 integrate a specific button called ROG Keystone II that allows, among many things, to switch between the profiles stored in the ROG ID or run different games or programs.
