PS Plus and Xbox Game Pass are the subscription gaming services of Sony and Microsoft, respectively. The first was expanded in late March with new plans that arrive in June offering more than 700 games in the catalog, while the second also brings titles via streaming, releases, and the possibility of playing on PC. The prices of PS Plus and Xbox Game Pass are between $9.99 and $14.99 per month, in three subscription options each. Check out, below, for more details about the two platforms and know which one is better for you.
What are the services?
The new version of PS Plus is a combination of the old subscription service and PS Now, Sony’s game streaming platform. The revamp introduces benefits such as game testing, over 700 titles in the library, and access to games that hit on older consoles, including titles from Sony’s own and partner studios. PS Plus offers subscribers three types of plans and arrives first in the Asian market in June 2022, followed by North America, Europe, and the rest of the world respectively.
Xbox Game Pass is considered by the gaming community to be one of Microsoft’s biggest successes. The service is known as the “Netflix of games” and contains three subscription plans, all with a varied library that includes own and third-party games via download or streaming.
The platform’s greatest differentiator is exactly the Xbox Game Studios titles, as these arrive on the platform on launch day, a measure that Sony will not offer on PS Plus plans. The success of the Xbox Game Pass is so impressive that Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer had already anticipated that a response from Sony was inevitable.
What packages are available?
The new PS Plus comprises three subscription packages: Essential, Extra, and Deluxe. Essential provides two free games per month, access to online multiplayer, plus discounts and cloud storage (perks already present in the current subscription). Extra includes the Essential features plus up to 400 PS4 and PS5 games. The most complete plan has different versions and values according to region.
Xbox Game Pass is also divided into three plans: Console, PC, and Ultimate. The first contains more than 100 console games and discounts for members. The PC package is aimed at desktop users and includes EA Play with all major titles from developer Electronic Arts, plus access to exclusive offers and content for subscribers.
Finally, the Ultimate plan offers the entire library of Game Pass and EA Play games for console, PC, and mobile devices. The most complete package also includes Xbox Live Gold, whose catalog of free games is updated monthly and allows you to play and stream games from the cloud. Note that Xbox Game Pass plans include titles for Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
What games are available?
The catalogs of both services are updated frequently. PS Plus promises to bring together more than 700 games, including classic and modern titles. The service launches in June and will be accompanied by Death Stranding, God of War, Mortal Kombat 11, Returnal, Spider-Man, and Spider-Man: Miles Morales. However, the full release schedule has not yet been released.
Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan told Games Industry that the PS Plus catalog will embrace all types of games, from indie titles to big names to classics that celebrate the heritage of PlayStation consoles.
However, Sony has already made it clear that developer-exclusive games will not enter PS Plus on launch day, as they do on Xbox Game Pass. Microsoft’s initiative to prioritize the arrival of titles on the platform on the so-called day one was successful with Forza Horizon 5 and Halo Infinite, and the idea is to embrace the entire portfolio of Xbox labels.
It is worth remembering that the company’s most recent acquisition was Activision-Blizzard, responsible for franchises such as Call of Duty and World of Warcraft. It is worth remembering that subscribers of the Xbox Game Pass PC and Ultimate plans also have access to EA Play, which owns the FIFA, F1, Madden, and Star Wars franchises, among others.
What are the advantages of each?
The big new feature of PS Plus is game testing. The feature allows subscribers of the Deluxe plan to try games for a limited time before finalizing the purchase.
Xbox Game Pass, on the other hand, has two differentiators compared to Sony’s product. The platform makes available all games from Xbox Game Studios and some titles from partner studios right on launch day at no additional cost. In addition, the Ultimate package offers a trial for some EA Play titles and allows connection to game streaming, Xbox Live Gold. It is worth noting that Game Pass encompasses the Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One libraries.
And the cost-benefit?
PS Plus comes with monthly, quarterly, and yearly subscription options. The Essential plan costs $10 per month, while the quarterly package costs $25, generating a monthly value of $6.25. The annual subscription costs $60 (approximately $5 per month).
The second option is the Extra plan, with monthly fees of $14.99, $39.99 (quarterly, about $9.99 per month), or $99.99 (annual, $8.33 per month). The third and final alternative for PS Plus subscribers is the Deluxe plan, whose monthly fee comes to $17.99, $49.99 ($12.49 per month), or $149.99 ($12.50 per month).
Xbox Game Pass, on the other hand, only offers monthly subscriptions. The Console and PC plans cost $9.99, while the Ultimate package has a monthly fee of $14.99. Currently, the PC and Ultimate are promotional prices of $1 for the first month.
