Samsung has just unveiled its new batch of smartwatches. The Korean company has unveiled, in addition to the Galaxy Z Fold4 and Z Flip4, the Galaxy Watch5 and Galaxy Watch5 Pro, two high-end smartwatches that come with improvements in sensors and the Exynos W920 (which we know from the previous generation).
The Samsung Galaxy Watch5 will be available in two versions, one of 40 and one of 44 millimeters, as well as in various colors. The Samsung Galaxy Watch5 Pro, meanwhile, will only be available in a single version of 45 millimeters and in black and gray. And yes, it is confirmed that this generation does not have the rotating crown so characteristic of Samsung watches.

More battery, better sensors, but no rotating crown

We start with the Samsung Galaxy Watch5. This model is available with a 40-millimeter case or in a larger 44-millimeter size. The 40-millimeter has a 1.2-inch AMOLED display with 396 x 396 pixels resolution, while the 44-millimeter features a 1.4-inch AMOLED panel with 450 x 450 pixels. Both are protected by a sapphire crystal.
On the sides of both watches, we find the buttons/sensors, microphone, and speaker, as it is possible to make and receive calls from the smartwatch itself. The thickness is the same, 9.8 millimeters, but the weight is higher in the 44-millimeter model (28.7 and 33.5 grams, respectively). The rotating crown, which in previous generations was used to scroll through the menus, is not present, although the frame around the screen is tactile and functions as the crown.

At the bottom, we have Samsung’s bioactive sensor, larger and capable of measuring heart rate, making electrocardiograms, measuring blood pressure, measuring the level of oxygen in the blood, and making a bioelectrical impedance analysis. What is it for? To measure body composition (body fat, BMI, muscle and skeletal mass, fat mass, basal metabolism). This is not new, as this function was already in the Watch4. An infrared sensor is also added to measure body temperature.
There are new features in sleep analysis, such as a new interface, a training program, an analysis of sleep habits, and a system that, through the cell phone and SmartThings (and assuming that everything is synchronized with the Samsung ecosystem), allows you to control the lights at home to create optimal environments for sleep.

The operating system is WearOS 3.5 with OneUI Watch, as it could not be otherwise, which allows apps to be downloaded from Google Play, use Google Maps, etc. The processor is the Exynos W920, also from the previous generation, but is now accompanied by a larger capacity battery (284 and 410 mAh, depending on the version) and fast charging (from 0% to 45% in 30 minutes).
Both watches include a GPS chip, support for NFC and you have LTE variants, so you can activate an eSIM to make and receive calls without relying on the smartphone.
Samsung Galaxy Watch5 Pro, designed for athletes

In addition to the Galaxy Watch5, Samsung has also taken the opportunity to present a Pro version. This device is virtually identical to the standard models in terms of functions but has some exclusive features designed for athletes.
On the one hand, the Samsung Galaxy Watch5 Pro is made of titanium, is slightly thicker (10.5 millimeters), and weighs 46.5 grams, an important difference compared to the other models. The screen has the same technology and diagonal as the 45-millimeter Galaxy Watch5, i.e. 1.36-inch AMOLED with 450 x 450 pixels, but the battery has even more capacity: 590 mAh.

The strap is also different, as instead of having a standard buckle, it has a D-Buckle clasp that is easier to open and close and allows you to adjust the strap length without the need for holes.
In terms of sport-specific features, the Galaxy Watch5 Pro allows you to import route files (.GPX) to the watch so you can track them directly from the watch. They also support turn-by-turn navigation via voice and vibration and Track Back, to retrace our steps thanks to the integrated GPS route log.
