Just like Polk Legend L100, American loudspeaker specialist Polk Audio presents two models for outdoor use. The Polk Atrium 4 and 5 ($181.02 and $299 per pair, respectively) are loudspeakers ready to withstand the weather: sun, rain, cold – perfect for outdoor use in a terrace or garden. Available in white or black, they come with an anchor for wall mounting and have very good acoustic characteristics. In this video, the brand itself freezes a speaker and then tests it successfully.
Enjoy Music outside Irrespective of the Weather
With the arrival of more moderate temperatures and good weather, the house “expands” from closed rooms to terraces and gardens. A good option to continue enjoying music in these open spaces is to have speakers designed for this purpose. The Polk Audio Atrium 4 and 5 are weatherproof loudspeakers that can be mounted on walls at any height, as well as on ceilings or floors. They can remain outdoors without being damaged by harsh weather conditions such as rainwater, UV rays, or extreme temperatures, thanks to their resistant polypropylene enclosure with mineral filler.
These are “satellite” type loudspeakers with quite compact dimensions. The Atrium 4 weighs just 1.6 kg and measures 22 cm high with a base of 14 x 17 cm. The Atrium 5 is slightly larger, weighing just over 2 kg and measuring 26 cm high with a 17 x 19 cm base. Both come with a very simple quick-lock mounting system: just mount the U-shaped aluminum bracket and clip the speaker into place. From there, simply focus and adjust it in the desired direction. They can also be oriented both horizontally and vertically and the bracket offers a 180-degree angle of movement.
The Polk Audio Atrium 4 and 5 have advanced technologies such as Dynamic Balance, which achieves a more realistic sound reproduction at high and low volumes. And the house PowerPort, for deep and extended bass impact with minimal distortion. Both excel in delivering spectacular high-fidelity sound.
Both Polk Atriums are two-way boxes with two speakers. The larger Atrium 5 features a 5-inch diameter cone midrange and bass speaker with a three-quarter-inch dome tweeter (tweeter). Its frequency response starts from a good bass level (60 Hz) up to 25 kHz, with a sensitivity of 90 dB that will allow it to sound at a remarkable volume without demanding too much power to the amplifier used (nor too much current thanks to its nominal impedance of 8 ohms).
The more compact Atrium 4s have a slightly smaller midrange and bass speaker (4.5-inch cone) with the same three-quarter-inch tweeter. That and their design also ensure continuity of timbre if used in a system mixing both types, or even in a multichannel system. The Atrium 4’s figures are a frequency response from 75 Hz to 25 kHz with a slightly lower sensitivity (89 dB) and also 8-ohm impedance for great compatibility with any amplifier.
The firm’s patented Dynamic Balance technology is used in the enclosure design: it analyzes the entire electro-acoustic and mechanical system of the speaker to achieve better material selection and more efficient geometry, for more realistic sound reproduction at high and low volumes. As for PowerPort technology, it achieves a smooth transition of air from the speaker to the area where the sound is being heard, for a deep and extended bass impact, with less turbulence and distortion than traditional bass-reflex systems.
