Motorola has just announced its new high-end smartphone, the Motorola Edge S. It is one of the first phones to mount the Snapdragon 870 processor, a new SoC for the high-end affordable range of 2021, somewhere between the Snapdragon 865+ and the Snapdragon 888. The Motorola Edge S has been launched in China, where it can already be purchased.
The Motorola Edge S is a 5G device that the brand does not seem to have skimped on components. It mounts up to 8 GB of LPDDR5 RAM, UFS 3.1 internal storage (currently the fastest), and a triple rear camera with a 64-megapixel main sensor. Its price in China starts at approximately $308, EUR 254 at the exchange rate.

Huge screen with 90 Hz
Let’s start by reviewing the design. The Motorola Edge S has a simple design at the back, which is something that we are used to from the brand. It is available in blue and silver, and both are finished with flashes of different colors. At the back are the brand’s logo (where, strangely, the fingerprint reader has not been integrated, which has been moved to the side) and the module with the three cameras and the LED flash. It also has a USB Type-C port and a headphone jack.
A look at the display reveals a 6.7-inch IPS/LCD panel in 21:9 format with FullHD+ resolution (2,520 x 1,080 pixels), so it’s not exactly small. This one supports HDR10, has a pixel density of 409 pixels per inch, reproduces the DCI-P3 color space, and has a refresh rate of 90 Hz.
The panel is double-hole punched in the upper left corner. Unlike other smartphones, which have a wider black islet, Lenovo has chosen to make two holes to hide the two internal cameras, which we’ll talk about next. All of this has been crammed into a device that measures 168.4 millimeters tall, with a thickness of 9.69 millimeters and a weight of 215 grams.
Snapdragon 870 is the Mounted processor
The Motorola Edge S is one of the first cell phones to mount the new Snapdragon 870, a processor that as we said earlier is designed for high-end affordable devices. This has eight cores at a maximum speed of 3.2 GHz and is built in a seven-nanometer process. It is compatible with 5G NSA and SA networks and WiFi 6.
It is accompanied by 6 or 8 gigs of LPDDR5x RAM and 128 or 256 GB of UFS 3.1 internal storage, so speed doesn’t seem to be in short supply. Its battery amounts to 5,000 mAh with 20W fast charging. The operating system, meanwhile, is Android 11 with the Lenovo layer, which allows the device to support desktop mode (a kind of Samsung DeX developed by Lenovo).
Let’s move on to talk about the camera. The Motorola Edge S has three cameras on the back: a 64-megapixel main sensor capable of recording in 6K at 30 FPS, a 16-megapixel wide-angle with macro mode, and a two-megapixel depth sensor, plus a ToF with artificial intelligence to improve depth measurements. The front camera consists of a 16-megapixel main sensor and an 8-megapixel wide-angle.
Motorola Edge S Pricing and Availability
The Motorola Edge S can be purchased in two colors (blue and silver) and three different versions, although the silver model is only available in 8/128 GB. The blue model, however, is available in 6/128 GB, 8/128 GB, and 8/256 GB.
The smartphone has been launched in China, where it is already available for purchase. At the moment there is no news about its possible arrival in Spain, but we will update this text in case it does. In the meantime, prices in China are as follows:
- Motorola Edge S 6/128 GB: 1,999 yuan, about $308 at the exchange rate.
- Motorola Edge S 8/128 GB: 2,399 yuan, about $370 at the exchange rate.
- Motorola Edge S 8/256 GB: 2,799 yuan, about $432 at the exchange rate.
